What are Backlinks?

A backlink is simply a link on someone else's website that points to yours. Search engines treat each backlink as a vote of confidence: if reputable sites link to you, your site is probably worth showing in results.

Backlinks are the raw material behind authority scores like Domain Rating. A site with zero backlinks is invisible to Google no matter how good its content is.

Why backlinks matter

• They drive rankings. Backlinks remain one of the strongest ranking factors. Two comparable pages compete on who has the stronger link profile.
• They get you crawled and indexed faster. Google discovers new sites by following links. A fresh domain with a few backlinks gets crawled in days instead of weeks.
• They bring referral traffic. A link on a directory or blog that your audience actually reads sends visitors directly, independent of SEO.
• They feed AI answers. AI search engines lean on well-linked sources when choosing what to cite.

Quality over quantity

Not all backlinks are equal. What matters:

• Referring domain authority. One link from a DR 70 site beats dozens from DR 5 sites.
• Dofollow vs nofollow. Only dofollow links pass meaningful authority.
• Relevance. A link from a startup directory to a startup is natural; a link from an unrelated niche looks paid and counts less.
• Unique domains. The tenth link from the same site adds almost nothing. New referring domains are what move your score.

For a brand new product the realistic sources are:

• Launch platforms and directories. The fastest route: every listing is a backlink from an established domain.
• Your own profiles. GitHub, X, LinkedIn, and community profiles all let you link your site.
• Guest posts and interviews. Slower, but the links come with real readers.
• Partners and friends. Cross-link with makers whose products complement yours.
