It compares domains against each other and is not used by Google.</p><p>Domain Rating is a score from 0 to 100 that Ahrefs assigns to a website based on the strength of its <a href="/how-to/backlinks-for-startups#backlink-profile">backlink profile</a>. It answers one narrow question: compared to every other site Ahrefs knows about, how much link authority does this domain hold?</p>

<p>Two properties matter more than the number itself. First, DR is calculated from links, not from content quality, traffic, revenue, or how good your product is. A brilliant site nobody links to scores near zero. Second, the scale is logarithmic, so the gaps are wildly uneven. Climbing from DR 10 to DR 20 might take a few months of ordinary work. Climbing from DR 70 to DR 80 takes the kind of link profile that large media brands accumulate over a decade.</p>

<p>The single most important thing to understand: <strong>Google does not use Domain Rating.</strong> It is an Ahrefs invention, calculated from the Ahrefs crawl. <h3>Why Domain Rating matters for startups</h3>

<p>DR is most valuable as a filter, not a goal. When you have thirty places you could submit your product to, or twenty blogs you could pitch, you need a fast way to rank them. Checking DR takes seconds and tells you which links are likely to matter.</p>

<p>It also sets expectations honestly. If you are DR 8 and everyone ranking on page one for your target query is DR 60, you are not going to win that query this quarter no matter how good the page is. That is genuinely useful information, because it redirects you toward the specific, lower competition queries you can actually win now.</p>

<p>Say you launched three months ago and you are DR 4. You pull together twenty five startup directories and check them in bulk. Six come back above DR 60, eleven land between DR 20 and DR 50, and eight are under DR 15 or return no data at all.</p>

<p>The naive move is to submit to the six highest and ignore the rest. <p>DR moves slowly and in steps, not smoothly. It updates as Ahrefs recrawls, so do not check it weekly and read meaning into small changes. Monthly is plenty. And remember DR measures the domain, so a link from a high DR site tells you nothing about the value of that specific link until you have checked whether it is followed and where on the page it sits.</p>

It is a Moz model, not a Google metric.</p><p>Domain Authority is a score from 0 to 100 created by Moz that predicts how likely a website is to rank in search results. Like <a href="/how-to/domain-rating-explained#domain-rating">Domain Rating</a>, it is calculated largely from the link graph, and like DR it is logarithmic, so the higher you climb the harder each point becomes.</p>

<p>The difference in intent is worth knowing. DR is a fairly direct measure of backlink strength. DA is a machine learning model that Moz trains to predict ranking ability, and it gets retrained periodically. That means your DA can move without you doing anything, simply because Moz changed how the model works or recrawled the web.</p>

<p>As with DR, <strong>Google does not use Domain Authority.</strong> There is no internal Google score called domain authority. Google representatives have said this repeatedly, and it remains one of the most persistent misunderstandings in SEO, partly because the phrase sounds like something a search engine would obviously have.</p>

<p>Because they run on different crawls, the same site frequently scores differently on each. A domain at DA 40 might be DR 32, or DR 48. Neither is wrong. They are two companies estimating the same underlying thing with different data and different methods.</p>

<p>Mostly it matters because other people will quote it at you. Directory owners, guest post sellers, and agencies routinely cite DA in their pitches, so understanding what it does and does not mean protects you from paying for the wrong thing.</p>

<p>It is also a reasonable second opinion. If a site shows healthy on one metric and poor on the other, that gap is worth a look. Sometimes it means one crawler has simply seen more of the web. Sometimes it means the profile is inflated with links that one index counts and the other discounts.</p>

<p>You get an email offering a guest post on a site with "DA 55, great for SEO". Before paying, you check the same domain and find DR 12. That is a large enough gap to investigate.</p>

<p>Looking closer, the site has a small number of very old links from a few strong domains, which the Moz model rewards, and almost no recent editorial coverage. Its published posts have no organic traffic. The DA number is technically accurate and commercially meaningless. You decline, and put the budget toward a niche <a href="/directories">startup directory</a> at DR 30 that actually sends visitors.</p>

<p>Pick one metric and stay with it, because switching between DA and DR makes your own tracking incoherent. Most founders default to DR simply because the Ahrefs index is larger, and because a free check is easy to run.</p>

<p>Whichever you choose, treat both as relative rather than absolute. The useful question is never "is DA 40 good", it is "how does this compare to the sites I am competing with, and to where I was three months ago".</p>

Where <a href="/how-to/domain-rating-explained#domain-rating">Domain Rating</a> asks how strong the domain is, UR asks how strong this page is, based on the links pointing at it.</p>

<p>The critical difference is that UR counts <strong>internal links as well as external ones</strong>. A page that dozens of your own pages link to will carry a higher UR than an orphaned page on the same domain, even though nothing external changed. That makes UR partly under your direct control, which is unusual among authority metrics and makes it far more actionable than DR.</p>

<p>Like every metric in this family, UR is an Ahrefs estimate rather than anything Google publishes or uses.</p>

<h3>Why page level beats domain level</h3>

<p>Google ranks pages, not websites. A site with a strong domain can still have a page that ranks nowhere, because nothing points at that page. This is the single most common reason a tool or landing page underperforms despite sitting on a healthy domain: it was published, linked once from a navigation menu, and then left alone.</p>

<p>Because internal links feed UR, improving it is often the cheapest ranking work available. You already own every page on your site. <p>You built a free tool page and it sits at position 70 for its target query. The domain is DR 31, which should be enough to compete for a low competition term, so the domain is not the problem.</p>

<p>Checking the page, you find its UR is 2. Nothing links to it except the footer. You then add contextual links from the twelve articles and glossary entries that genuinely relate to it, each using slightly different natural anchor text. Over the following weeks the UR climbs, the page gets recrawled more often, and it starts moving up. No new backlinks were earned. The authority was already on the domain; it simply was not being routed anywhere useful.</p>

<h3>Rules of thumb</h3>

<p>Before chasing external links for a page, check whether you have exhausted internal ones. Most sites have not. If a page has fewer than five internal links pointing at it, that is the first thing to fix.</p>

<p>Vary the anchor text and keep it natural. Three hundred pages linking with the identical phrase looks templated, and templated link patterns are discounted. Vary the surrounding context too: a link inside a relevant paragraph carries more weight than one in a repeated footer block.</p>

<p>The mistake most people make is asking the assistant about their brand by name. That tells you whether the engine has heard of you, which is useful, but it is not how buyers discover products. <h2 id="each-engine">Step 2: know how each engine decides, then ask it</h2>

<p>ChatGPT draws on two things: what its model learned from the web at training time, and, when search is on, live pages it retrieves. Both reward a broad, consistent footprint. Brands described the same way across many credible pages get recalled accurately. Brands that exist mostly on their own site get omitted or described vaguely.</p>
<p>To track it by hand, open a fresh chat for each question so earlier answers do not colour the next one, ask the six questions, and record which brands appear and how yours is described. Answers vary between runs even when nothing changed, so ask twice if a result surprises you. <p>Perplexity is retrieval-first. It searches, reads the most authoritative pages it finds, writes an answer and cites them with visible links that users click. <p>A spreadsheet with one row per question and one column per month is all you need. For each cell record: named (yes or no), position among the brands named, sentiment, and the description in one line. Then roll it up into one number so you can see movement at a glance. Weighting category mentions heavily is deliberate: recognition without recommendation is where most startups sit, and it is the gap that costs sales.</p>

<h2 id="improve">Step 4: change what the engines read</h2>
<p>You cannot edit an answer, but you can change the evidence it is built from. These are the levers, roughly in order of impact for an early-stage brand:</p>

<li><strong>Be on the pages the engines read.</strong> Directory listings, review platforms, "best tools" roundups and comparison articles are the most cited content types in recommendation answers. A launch listing with a clear one-line description is a citable source; your own homepage alone rarely is.</li>
<li><strong>Say the same sentence everywhere.</strong> Models echo the most repeated description of a brand across the web. Pick one line in the form "X is a Y for Z" and use it verbatim on every directory, social bio, press mention and docs page.</li>
<li><strong>Publish comparison pages.</strong> "X vs Y" and "X alternatives" pages teach assistants your position in exactly the frame buyers ask about. Write them against the competitors your tracker run named most often.</li>
<li><strong>Keep facts fresh and public.</strong> Perplexity and Gemini retrieve live pages and quote them. Public pricing, current docs and a changelog give them concrete sentences to lift. Gated or stale pages are skipped, or worse, quoted when wrong.</li>
<li><strong>Let the crawlers in.</strong> Check robots.txt. GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot feed OpenAI, PerplexityBot feeds Perplexity, and Google-Extended controls whether Google may use your pages for Gemini. Blocking them removes you from the answers you are trying to enter.</li>
<li><strong>Join real conversations.</strong> Reddit threads, Hacker News comments and niche forums carry heavy weight in training data and in retrieval. A genuine recommendation from a user in a thread often outranks a paid placement.</li>
<li><strong>Treat launches as visibility events.</strong> A launch creates a burst of fresh, consistent coverage: announcements, listings, discussion, reviews. That is exactly the signal that shifts how assistants describe you, so time your content push around it.</li>
