How to Track Brand Mentions in Perplexity (2026 Guide)

Track brand mentions in Perplexity by hand or with tools: the questions to ask, how to read citations, referral traffic, and what trackers cost.

How to Track Brand Mentions in Perplexity (2026 Guide)

To track brand mentions in Perplexity, ask it the questions your buyers research, open the sources under each answer, and write down two things: whether your brand is named, and whether your own domain is one of the cited sources. Ask the same questions every month so the results are comparable, and check your analytics for visits from perplexity.ai. By hand, that is a short monthly session per product. A free tracker does the asking and tallying in 15 to 40 seconds. Paid tools earn their price once you need dozens of prompts checked daily.

This guide is Perplexity-only. For one method that covers ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini together, read how to track brand mentions in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini.

Disclosure: LaunchIt builds a free Perplexity mention tracker, and it appears in the tools section below. Weigh that accordingly. Everything in the manual method works without it.

Why citations are the unit that matters in Perplexity

Most AI assistants give you an answer and nothing else. Perplexity searches the live web, reads the pages it judges most authoritative, and shows its sources as visible links that people click. A Perplexity mention behaves like a search ranking with a referral attached.

Two things can happen to your brand in one answer, and they combine into four outcomes:

  • Named and cited. The answer recommends you and links to your site. You get the mention and the click.
  • Named, not cited. You are recommended on the strength of someone else's page: a directory, a roundup, a review thread. That page is speaking for you.
  • Cited, not named. Perplexity used one of your pages as a source, often a blog post or a docs page, but recommended other brands. Your content is trusted, your product not yet.
  • Neither. You are invisible for that question, and the source list shows who is doing the job instead.

Tracking only "named or not" misses half the picture. The citation is the part you can act on.

How to see mentions in Perplexity

Perplexity has no equivalent of Search Console that lists the answers you appeared in, so you measure from the outside with two signals: the answers to a fixed set of questions asked on a schedule, and the referral visits its citations send you. The first is controlled and comparable. The second catches questions you never thought to ask.

How to track brand mentions in Perplexity manually

Step 1: write four category questions and two branded ones

Category questions never mention your brand. They test whether Perplexity recommends you to a buyer who has not heard of you yet. Write them the way a person types:

  • "What are the best [category] tools?"
  • "Recommend a [category] tool for [specific audience]."
  • "What are the alternatives to [market leader]?"
  • "Which [category] tool should I use, and why?"

Branded questions name you: "What is [brand] and what is it used for?" and "Is [brand] any good compared to alternatives?" They test recognition and accuracy. When an answer gets your pricing or a feature wrong, the citations usually point to the outdated page it came from, often one you can fix the same day.

Keep all six questions identical every month. Change the wording and you reset the trend.

Step 2: ask Perplexity and capture every source

  1. Start a fresh thread for each question, so one answer does not shape the next.
  2. Note every brand named, in order, and the one line used to describe yours.
  3. Open the full source list and copy every domain, not just the first few shown.
  4. Match sentences to sources. The numbered markers show which source each claim came from. If your description comes from an old roundup, that roundup is shaping how buyers see you.
  5. Check whether your own domain is in the list, and which page.
  6. Ask again if a result surprises you. Answers vary between runs, so one odd answer is not a trend.

Step 3: record it in a scoring sheet

Use one row per question and one block of columns per month. For Perplexity, add citation columns:

ColumnWhat to record
QuestionThe exact wording, unchanged month to month
TypeCategory or branded
NamedYes or no
PositionWhere you appear among the brands named
Your domain citedYes or no, and which URL
Cited domainsEvery domain in the source list
Competitors namedThe other brands, in order
DescriptionHow Perplexity describes you, in one line

Then roll it into one number with the formula our trackers use:

  • 70 points for category questions: the share of the four category questions where you were named.
  • 30 points for branded questions: the share of the two branded questions where Perplexity showed real knowledge of you rather than guessing.

0 means invisible. Under 40 means Perplexity knows the name but does not recommend you. 70 and above means you are a default pick for the category. Next to the score, keep a second number only a citing engine gives you: how many of the six answers cited your domain.

Step 4: turn the source list into a target list

Six answers give you a list of the exact pages Perplexity reads when someone researches your category. Being mentioned, reviewed or listed on those pages does more for your visibility than general link building ever will.

  1. Tally the domains. A domain cited in three answers is worth more than six domains cited once.
  2. Sort them by type: directories, "best tools" roundups and comparison articles, review and discussion threads, documentation, and competitors' own pages.
  3. Give each type one action. Directory: get listed with your one-line description. Roundup: send the author your facts for the next update. Thread: join only if you have something useful to add, and say who you are. Competitor page: publish your own honest comparison.
  4. Prioritise by authority. Perplexity leans on domain authority when choosing sources, so one mention on a strong directory or publication beats ten on unknown blogs. Run the list through the bulk domain rating checker and start at the top.

If directories dominate your list, our 216 startup directories ranked by DR will show the strong ones you are missing.

Expect one uncomfortable finding: Perplexity citing a competitor's comparison page when someone asks about your product. It does that because the page is well structured and answers the question directly. The practical counter is your own honest comparison page, plus listings in neutral roundups.

Step 5: measure Perplexity referral traffic

Its citations are real links, so referrals appear in your analytics with perplexity.ai as the source. You can measure the traffic directly instead of inferring it from brand searches.

  • Find it. In Google Analytics 4, open Traffic acquisition, use session source as the dimension, and filter for "perplexity".
  • Read the landing pages. The pages Perplexity visitors land on are pages it cites. Keep those fresh.
  • Judge quality separately. These visitors are usually comparing options, often close to a decision, so track their signups apart from general referral traffic.
  • Treat the number as a floor. Some clicks can arrive without a referrer and land in direct traffic.

Log the monthly session count next to your score. When both rise together, the work is landing.

Check that PerplexityBot can read your site

Perplexity documents its crawler, PerplexityBot, and honours robots.txt directives aimed at it. Blocking it removes your pages from the pool Perplexity can read and cite, and a blanket disallow rule written with other AI crawlers in mind can catch it by accident. Open yoursite.com/robots.txt and check two things:

  • No group headed "User-agent: PerplexityBot" has "Disallow: /" under it.
  • No "User-agent: *" group disallows the whole site, or your product, pricing and docs pages.

Blocking on purpose is your call, but make it a decision, not a side effect. And if your host or CDN runs bot protection, check that it is not turning away crawlers your robots.txt allows.

How to get more brand citations in Perplexity

You cannot edit an answer, but you can change the pages it is built from:

  • Keep key pages fresh. Perplexity retrieves live pages and favours recent ones, so updating your pricing, product and comparison pages and your listings directly improves your odds of being cited.
  • Write quotable sentences. Answers lift concise, factual statements. "X does Y for Z, starting at $N a month" is far more citable than marketing prose. Use the same one-liner everywhere you are listed.
  • Get into roundups on authoritative domains. Your tallied source list tells you which ones.
  • Keep documentation public. Docs pages answer the specific "how does X handle this" questions Perplexity users ask. Gated or thin docs forfeit those citations.

The broader playbook is in how to get your startup recommended by LLMs.

How often to check

  • Monthly: run the six questions, update the sheet, and log Perplexity referral sessions. About half an hour by hand, a few minutes with a tracker.
  • After a launch, press or a pricing change: re-run within two weeks. Fresh coverage can show up quickly, and a pricing change is exactly when old pages start getting quoted wrong.
  • Quarterly: review the source tally and competitor names, then pick two sources to get onto and one comparison page to write.

Tools to track Perplexity mentions: free and paid

Plans and prices below come from each vendor's own pages, checked in September 2026. Prices change often, so confirm before you buy. The full comparison of 13 trackers across every engine is in best tools to track brand mentions in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini.

Free

  • LaunchIt Perplexity mention tracker (ours). Sends six questions, four category and two branded, to Perplexity's Sonar API and shows each answer in full with its citations, whether your site was cited, the competitors recommended instead, and a score out of 100. No account, 15 to 40 seconds. A check, not a monitor: one brand per run, no history, no alerts.
  • Free AI visibility checkers from Ahrefs, Semrush and SE Ranking, with limited daily attempts and no history. Check that each one covers Perplexity.
  • Otterly.AI Lite, $29 a month ($25 billed annually): 15 prompts tracked daily on ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Copilot. 7-day trial, no card. The clearest cheap plan, though 15 prompts fill up fast.
  • Am I Cited Starter, 50 euros a month: 200 prompts and up to 3,000 responses a month, Perplexity included. No daily schedule at this tier, and the trial needs a card.
  • SE Ranking Core, 87.20 euros a month billed annually (109 monthly): 100 prompts tracked daily, Perplexity included, alongside classic rank tracking. 14-day trial, no card.
  • Ahrefs Brand Radar, included in Ahrefs Lite at 119 euros a month: Perplexity is covered, but Lite tracks only 5 prompts.
  • Semrush Starter, 158.40 euros a month billed annually: 50 prompts tracked daily, with Perplexity among the engines.

Two tools need a closer look if Perplexity is your priority: Peec AI lists Perplexity as an add-on model, and Promptwatch Essential tracks four models without saying which four. Ask before you buy.

Our honest advice: run free checks monthly until a mention, or a lost one, has a value you can point to. That is the moment daily tracking pays for itself.

Frequently asked questions

How do I track mentions in Perplexity?

Ask Perplexity six fixed buyer questions (four about your category, two about your brand), open the sources under each answer, and record whether you were named and whether your domain was cited. Repeat monthly with the same wording, and log perplexity.ai referrals in your analytics.

How can I see mentions in Perplexity?

There is no dashboard for it. Read its answers to your buyers' questions, expand the sources, and check analytics for perplexity.ai referrals, whose landing pages show which of your pages it cites.

What's the best Perplexity mention tracker?

For a one-off check with the full answers and citations, a free tracker is enough. For daily monitoring, Otterly.AI, Am I Cited and SE Ranking include Perplexity in their entry plans. If you already pay for Ahrefs or Semrush, start with what you have.

What's the best free Perplexity rank tracker?

Perplexity answers have no rank positions in the search sense: you are named or not, cited or not. LaunchIt's tracker is free with no account, and Ahrefs, Semrush and SE Ranking offer free checkers with daily limits. None keep history, so log each run in your sheet.

What's a good Perplexity AI brand mention monitoring tool for a small team?

One with Perplexity in the base plan and a clear prompt allowance. Otterly.AI Lite suits one product with a dozen questions. Am I Cited Starter suits breadth over daily frequency. Someone also has to act on the citations, or the tool is just a chart.

Which platforms monitor brand mentions across ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity?

Most paid trackers cover all three, though not always at the entry tier. Am I Cited and SE Ranking include all three from the first plan, while Otterly.AI charges extra for Gemini on Lite. For free checks, run our ChatGPT tracker and Gemini tracker alongside the Perplexity one.

Get on a page Perplexity can cite

Your homepage alone is rarely what Perplexity cites in a category answer. Directory and launch listings with a clear one-line description are. That is part of why we run LaunchIt, so weigh this section accordingly.

Every launch gets a permanent listing page that never expires, on a domain with an Ahrefs Domain Rating of 61, with a dofollow link to your site. The Basic Launch is free: free launches wait in a review queue and need a backlink to LaunchIt from your site. Premium is a one-time payment ($14.99 at early pricing, normally $19) to launch as soon as tomorrow, with homepage placement on launch day and no badge required. Details are on the pricing page.

Launch your product on LaunchIt, write the one-liner you want Perplexity to quote, and re-run your six questions next month.
