I built GerbView to solve a practical problem: PCB manufacturing files are difficult to inspect without specialized software, and mistakes discovered after production begins can be expensive. I wanted to create a dependable Windows application that would let engineers, designers and manufacturers open Gerber, Excellon and ODB++ data, examine every layer and verify the information before sending a board to production. GerbView has evolved continuously through feedback from people working with real PCB data. As manufacturing formats have changed, I have expanded support from traditional Gerber and drill files to ODB++Design and Gerber X2/X3 attributes, including components, nets and pins. My approach has been to add useful capabilities without making the software unnecessarily complicated.
