How to Track Brand Mentions in Gemini (2026 Guide)
How to track brand mentions in Gemini: grounding sources, a scoring sheet, Google-Extended checks, GA4 referrals and free and paid trackers compared.
On this page
Here is how to track brand mentions in Gemini: ask it the questions your buyers research, open the sources it grounded each answer on, and record whether you are named, in what position, and whether your own domain is a source. Repeat the same questions monthly from the same setup, and check your analytics for visits from Gemini. Expect more movement than in ChatGPT, because many Gemini answers are grounded on live Google results and shift as the index does. By hand, that is a short monthly session per product. A free Gemini tracker does it in 15 to 40 seconds; paid tools earn their price once you need dozens of prompts checked daily.
This guide is Gemini-only. For one method covering ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini together, read how to track brand mentions in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini.
Disclosure: LaunchIt builds a free Gemini mention tracker, and it appears in the tools section below. Weigh that accordingly. Everything in the manual method works without it.
Why Gemini is different
Gemini sits inside Google Search, Android, Chrome and Workspace, so buyers meet it without opening a chatbot. Many of its answers are grounded on live Google Search results, with the grounding sources shown alongside. If you have read our Perplexity guide, the source logic will look familiar. The difference is the index underneath: Gemini borrows Google's, so its picks lean on the same authority signals Google uses.
Three things follow:
- Answers move more often. Grounding shifts with the index, so expect more month-to-month movement than in ChatGPT.
- Two speeds of change. A grounded answer can reflect a new page within days of it being crawled; anything drawn from training data moves on the timescale of model releases.
- Winner-take-most. An answer typically names only three to five options. There is no page two.
Gemini, AI Overviews and AI Mode are separate surfaces
AI Overviews is the summary on a Google results page; AI Mode is the conversational search inside Google. Gemini is the assistant itself. One question can get different answers on each, and trackers often price them as separate engines. Being cited in an AI Overview does not mean Gemini recommends you. For the results page, read how to get cited in Google AI Overviews.
What a Gemini rank tracker actually measures
Search for a Gemini rank tracker and you might expect positions 1 to 10. There are none in the classic sense: Gemini names a handful of options, and the next run may reorder them. Gemini rank tracking really measures four things: whether you are named, where you sit among the names, whether your pages are among the sources, and how you are described. Gemini brand mentions are a share, not a rank, and any Gemini visibility tracker worth using reports all four.
How to track brand mentions in Gemini manually
Step 1: write four category questions and two branded ones
Category questions never mention your brand. They test whether Gemini recommends you to a buyer who has not heard of you. Write them the way people type into Google or say to their phone:
- "What are the best [category] tools for [specific audience]?"
- "Which [category] tool should a small team use?"
- "What are the best alternatives to [market leader]?"
- "Compare the top [category] tools on price and features."
Branded questions name you: "What is [brand] and who is it for?" and "Is [brand] a good choice compared with alternatives?" They test recognition and accuracy. When Gemini gets your pricing wrong, the sources usually show which outdated page it read.
Keep all six questions identical every month. Change the wording and you reset the trend.
Step 2: fix your setup, then ask Gemini
Answers depend on more than the question, so note your setup and reuse it:
- Same model. The model you pick in the app changes the answer.
- Personalisation off where your settings allow, since Gemini can draw on your account and past chats.
- Same country and language. Grounded answers follow local results, so run a separate set for each language you sell in.
- A new chat per question, so one answer does not shape the next.
Then, for each answer:
- Note whether it shows sources. None means Gemini answered from what the model already knows.
- Copy every source domain, plus the exact page if it is yours.
- Note every brand named, in order, and how yours is described.
- Ask again if a result surprises you. Gemini varies between runs.
Step 3: record it in a scoring sheet
One row per question, one block of columns per month, setup noted at the top:
| Column | What to record |
|---|---|
| Question | The exact wording, unchanged month to month |
| Type | Category or branded |
| Named | Yes or no |
| Position | Where you appear among the brands named |
| Grounded | Yes or no: did the answer show sources? |
| Your domain in sources | Yes or no, and which URL |
| Source domains | Every domain Gemini grounded on |
| Competitors named | The other brands, in order |
| Description | How Gemini describes you, in one line |
Roll it into one score with the formula our trackers use:
- 70 points for category questions: the share of the four category questions where you were named.
- 30 points for branded questions: the share of the two branded questions where Gemini showed real knowledge of you rather than guessing.
0 means invisible. Under 40 means Gemini knows the name but does not recommend you. 70 and above means you are a default pick for the category.
Also count how many answers showed sources: grounded answers can move within weeks of better pages, while ungrounded ones largely wait for the next model release.
Step 4: check the sources against Google's results
Search each category question on Google and compare the top results with Gemini's sources. Where they overlap, ranking on Google for that query is your most direct route in. Where they differ, Gemini's sources are the pages to get onto.
Then turn the sources into a target list:
- Tally the domains. One that grounds three answers is worth more than six that ground one each.
- Act by type. Directory: get listed with your one-liner. Roundup: send the author your facts. Competitor page: publish your own honest comparison.
- Prioritise by authority. Gemini leans on Google's signals, so one listing on a strong domain beats ten on unknown blogs. Run the list through the bulk domain rating checker.
If directories dominate, our 216 startup directories ranked by DR show the strong ones you are missing.
Step 5: measure Gemini referral traffic
Search Console will not show this: AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic is counted under the Web search type, not broken out. Gemini app clicks can show up in analytics as referrals instead.
In GA4, open Traffic acquisition, set session source as the dimension and filter for "gemini". The landing pages are pages Gemini cites, so keep them accurate. Treat the count as a floor, since some clicks arrive without a referrer, and log it next to your score.
Check Google-Extended and Googlebot access
Google-Extended is a robots.txt token controlling whether your content is used for training and grounding Gemini models. Google's crawler documentation states: "Google-Extended does not impact a site's inclusion in Google Search nor is it used as a ranking signal in Google Search." So blocking it does not remove you from AI Overviews, and allowing it does not get you in. Blocking it does remove you from the pool Gemini may ground on.
Open yoursite.com/robots.txt and check two things:
- No User-agent: Google-Extended group has Disallow: / under it.
- No User-agent: * group disallows the whole site, or your product, pricing and docs pages.
Blocking on purpose is your call, but make it a decision, not a side effect. Googlebot also needs to render your pages: in Search Console, use URL Inspection, then Test live URL, and check that the rendered HTML contains your description and pricing.
How to get more brand mentions in Gemini
You cannot edit an answer, but you can change what Gemini reads:
- Rank on Google first. Gemini grounds on Google results, so pages that rank are the ones it is most likely to read. The on-page SEO checker runs 18 checks on a page.
- Write quotable passages: a clear factual answer in a sentence or two, definition paragraphs, comparison tables and docs pages.
- Standardise your one-liner: "X is a Y for Z", word for word, everywhere you are listed.
- Get into "best tools for" listicles that rank. They are among the most-cited content types in AI recommendations.
- Align your Google Business Profile with your website. It helps for anything with a local or company dimension, and mismatches between the two are a frequent cause of wrong answers.
The broader playbook is in how to get your startup recommended by LLMs.
How often to check
- Monthly: run the six questions, update the sheet, and log Gemini referrals. About half an hour by hand, a few minutes with a tracker.
- After a launch, press or a pricing change: re-run within two weeks, since grounded answers pick up new pages fast.
- After a major Gemini model release: re-run, because that is when answers drawn from training data shift.
- Quarterly: review the source tally, competitors and Google overlap, then pick two sources to get onto and one page to improve. Judge Gemini on the three-month trend, not one run.

- Semrush Starter, 158.40 euros a month billed annually: 50 prompts daily, Gemini included.
- cloro, an API with no dashboard: a Gemini answer costs 4 credits and returns structured JSON with every cited source. Free plan 500 credits a month; Lite $30 a month for 37,500 credits.
Watch the add-on with Otterly.AI. Lite is $29 a month ($25 billed annually) for 15 prompts daily on ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Copilot, with a 7-day trial and no card. Gemini is a $9 a month add-on at this tier, and AI Mode another $9.
Our honest advice: run free checks monthly until a Gemini mention, or a lost one, has a value you can point to. Then daily tracking pays for itself.
Frequently asked questions
How do I track brand mentions in Gemini?
Ask Gemini six fixed buyer questions, four about your category and two about your brand, with the same setup each month. Record whether you were named, in what position, and whether your domain was a source. Then check GA4 for Gemini referrals.
Is there a Gemini rank tracker?
Not in the classic sense: Gemini answers have no positions 1 to 10. Gemini rank trackers measure whether you are named, where you sit among the brands mentioned, and whether your pages are sources.
What's the best Gemini mentions tracker?
For a one-off check, a free tracker is enough. For ongoing tracking, pick a plan with Gemini included rather than sold as an add-on, such as Am I Cited, Peec AI or SE Ranking. If you already pay for Ahrefs or Semrush, start there.
Which tool can tell me how often my brand is mentioned in Gemini?
One that runs the same prompts on a schedule: SE Ranking, for example, checks Gemini daily. Free checkers, ours included, run once and keep no history, so log each run in your own sheet.
Which platforms monitor brand mentions across ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity?
Most paid trackers cover all three, though not always at the entry tier: Otterly.AI charges extra for Gemini. For free checks, run our ChatGPT tracker and Perplexity tracker alongside the Gemini one.
Get on a page Gemini can ground on
Your homepage alone is rarely what Gemini grounds a category answer on. Directory and launch listings with a clear one-line description often are. That is part of why we run LaunchIt, so weigh this section accordingly.
Every launch gets a permanent listing page that never expires, on a domain with an Ahrefs Domain Rating of 61, with a dofollow link to your site. The Basic Launch is free: free launches wait in a review queue and need a backlink to LaunchIt from your site. Premium is a one-time payment ($14.99 at early pricing, normally $19) to launch as soon as tomorrow, with homepage placement on launch day and no badge required. Details are on the pricing page.
Launch your product on LaunchIt, write the one-liner you want Gemini to repeat, and re-run your six questions next month.
