How to Track Brand Mentions in ChatGPT (2026 Guide)

How to track brand mentions in ChatGPT: six fixed questions, a scoring sheet, OAI-SearchBot checks, GA4 referrals and free and paid trackers.

How to Track Brand Mentions in ChatGPT (2026 Guide)

Knowing how to track brand mentions in ChatGPT comes down to one habit: ask it the same six buyer questions every month, from the same setup, and log what comes back. Four questions cover your category and never name you; two name your brand. For each answer, record whether you are named, your position, the competitors beside you, how you are described and, when ChatGPT searched the web, which sources it showed. Then check Google Analytics for visits tagged utm_source=chatgpt.com. A free tracker can run the questions for you in 15 to 40 seconds. Paid tools start to make sense when you need dozens of prompts checked every day.

Everything here is specific to ChatGPT. If you track all three major assistants, our guide to tracking brand mentions in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini covers them in one routine.

Disclosure: LaunchIt builds a free ChatGPT mention tracker, listed in the tools section below. Weigh that accordingly. You can do every step here by hand.

Why ChatGPT is different

ChatGPT answers from two places: what its model learned during training, and ChatGPT search, which retrieves live pages and shows them as sources. Our Perplexity guide covers a retrieval-first engine and our Gemini guide one grounded on Google's index. ChatGPT mixes both, so you are tracking what the model remembers about your category and what search finds today.

  • Two speeds of change. Search answers can pick up a new page once OAI-SearchBot has read it. Training-data answers only change when a new model ships.
  • Steadier, until it is not. Expect less monthly movement than in Perplexity or Gemini. When results jump, suspect search or a model change.
  • Few names per answer. A recommendation usually lists three to five products. You are named or you are not.

What a ChatGPT rank tracker actually measures

There is no position 7 in ChatGPT. It lists a handful of options, and the next run can reorder them. Any ChatGPT rank tracker, mention tracker or brand tracker really measures four things across a fixed set of prompts:

  • Inclusion. Are you named at all?
  • Position. Where do you sit among the brands named?
  • Description. How are you described, and is it accurate?
  • Sources. When the answer used search, is one of your pages cited?

Tools will disagree on single runs, because the ChatGPT app, ChatGPT search and the API our tracker uses can each answer differently. Compare trends within one method.

How to track brand mentions in ChatGPT manually

Step 1: write six questions and freeze them

Category questions leave your name out, as a buyer who has never heard of you would. Write them the way people talk to a chatbot:

  • "I run [specific audience]. Which [category] tool should I use?"
  • "What are the best [category] tools right now?"
  • "What are good alternatives to [market leader]?"
  • "Recommend a [category] tool under [budget] a month, and explain why."

Branded questions use your name: "What does [brand] do, and who is it for?" and "How does [brand] compare with its main alternatives?" They show whether ChatGPT knows you and gets your facts right. An old price points to stale training data or an outdated page.

Reuse all six word for word every month. A reworded question restarts your trend line.

Step 2: fix your setup, then ask ChatGPT

Write your setup at the top of the sheet and reuse it:

  • One model. Pick the same model in the model picker and note its name. If the default changes, record that too.
  • Memory and personalisation off where your settings allow. ChatGPT may remember that you built the product you are asking about.
  • One country and language. Run a separate set per market.
  • A fresh chat for every question, so context from one answer cannot leak into the next.

Then, for each answer:

  • Check whether it searched. A ChatGPT search answer shows sources; none means it came from training data.
  • Write down the brands in the order they appear, and copy ChatGPT's line about you word for word.
  • Open each source and log its domain, or the exact URL for your own site.
  • Re-ask anything surprising in a new chat before logging it. Answers vary between runs.

Step 3: record it in a scoring sheet

Questions down the side, a block of columns per month, setup in the first line. Record:

  • Question: the exact wording, unchanged.
  • Type: category or branded.
  • Named: yes or no.
  • Position: your place among the brands listed.
  • Searched: yes if sources were shown.
  • Sources: every domain cited, plus your URL if one of them is yours.
  • Competitors named: the other brands, in order.
  • Description: ChatGPT's line about you.

Then score each month out of 100, weighted the way our trackers do it:

  • Category, 70 points: 70 times the share of category questions where you appear. Named in three of four earns 52.5.
  • Branded, 30 points: 30 times the share of branded questions where ChatGPT clearly knew who you are, rather than guessing.

A 0 means ChatGPT never surfaces you. Under 40, it has heard of you but sends buyers elsewhere. At 70 or above, you are a default answer for the category. Most startups sit in between: recognised, not recommended.

Also count how many answers used search. None means your score reflects training data and will move slowly; most means better pages can move it before the next model release.

Step 4: read the sources, then split the diagnosis

Tally the source domains across all six answers:

  • Count repeats. One domain cited three times beats six cited once.
  • Sort by type. A directory needs your listing. A roundup needs its author to have your facts. A competitor's comparison page needs an answer from you.
  • Rank by strength. Run the domains through the bulk Domain Rating checker and start with the strongest.

Then compare answers with and without search:

  • Named with search, missing without. Current pages include you; the model has not learned about you yet. Stay consistent and wait for the next model.
  • Named without search, missing with. The model knows you; the pages search retrieves do not. Get onto your tallied domains.
  • Missing from both. A coverage problem, not a tracking one. Start with the pages cited for your category.

If directories dominate, check which of the 216 startup directories we rank by Domain Rating still do not list you.

Step 5: measure ChatGPT referral traffic in GA4

ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to links in its search results. In GA4's Traffic acquisition report, set the primary dimension to Session source and search for chatgpt.com; visits with chatgpt.com as the referrer land in the same row. Clicks carrying neither are invisible here, so read the number as a minimum and log it monthly. Keep the landing pages it lists accurate: they are where ChatGPT sends people.

In server logs, ChatGPT-User visits show which pages people asked ChatGPT to open.

Check OAI-SearchBot, GPTBot and ChatGPT-User access

OpenAI runs three user agents with different jobs:

  • OAI-SearchBot is for ChatGPT search. Opt out and your site will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though it can still appear as a navigational link. OpenAI recommends allowing it.
  • GPTBot crawls content that may be used to train OpenAI's foundation models. Disallowing it signals that your content should not be used for training.
  • ChatGPT-User fetches a page when someone in ChatGPT or a Custom GPT asks for it. It does not crawl automatically, robots.txt rules may not apply to it, and it has no say in whether you appear in search.

The first two are independent: allow OAI-SearchBot to appear in search, disallow GPTBot to stay out of training. The cost is that your own pages stop feeding what future models learn about you.

Open yoursite.com/robots.txt and check:

  • No User-agent: OAI-SearchBot group has Disallow: / under it.
  • No User-agent: * group blocks the site, or your product, pricing and docs pages.
  • If User-agent: GPTBot has Disallow: /, find out who added it and why.

OpenAI says its search systems can take about 24 hours to adjust after a robots.txt change. Its publishers and developers FAQ adds a catch: a blocked page whose URL is known from elsewhere may still appear as a link and title. A noindex meta tag prevents that, as long as the crawler is allowed to read it. All three agents are described in OpenAI's crawler documentation.

How to get mentioned more in ChatGPT

Nobody can edit a ChatGPT answer, but you can change the material behind it:

  • Get onto the pages search cites. Directory listings, "best tools" roundups and comparison articles are among the most cited content in recommendation answers. Start with your Step 4 tally.
  • Use one sentence everywhere. Models echo the description they have seen most. Write "X is a Y for Z" and paste it unchanged into every listing and profile.
  • Publish comparison pages against the competitors ChatGPT names beside you most often.
  • Keep facts public and current. Public pricing, docs and a changelog give search exact sentences to quote. The on-page SEO checker runs 18 checks on any page.
  • Join real conversations. Reddit, Hacker News and niche forums carry weight in training data and retrieval alike.
  • Treat launches as coverage bursts. One description on many pages at once feeds search now and the next model later.

The full playbook is in how to get your startup recommended by LLMs.

How often to check ChatGPT mentions

  • Monthly: the six questions, the sheet, the GA4 count. About half an hour by hand.
  • Two weeks after a launch, press or a price change: see whether search answers picked up the new pages.
  • After a ChatGPT model release: re-run, note the model, and expect training-data answers to shift.
  • Quarterly: review recurring competitors and source domains, then pick two listings to win and one page to rewrite. One run is noise; three months is a trend.

Tools to track ChatGPT mentions: free and paid

Every tracker in our comparison covers ChatGPT, so you are choosing on price and allowance. Prices are from vendor pages checked in September 2026 (cloro in October 2026); confirm before buying. All 13 are side by side in our comparison of ChatGPT brand mention tracking tools.

Free

  • LaunchIt ChatGPT mention tracker (ours). Six questions to OpenAI's GPT-5 mini through the API, each answer in full with whether and where you were named, competitors, your description, recommendations and a score out of 100. No account, 15 to 40 seconds. It is the API, not the app, so memory and search settings play no part and no sources are listed. A check, not a monitor: one brand per run, no history, no alerts.
  • Free AI visibility checkers from Ahrefs, Semrush and SE Ranking. Limited daily attempts, no history.
  • Otterly.AI Lite, $29 a month ($25 billed annually): 15 prompts daily on ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Copilot. 7-day trial, no card.
  • Am I Cited Starter, 50 euros a month: 200 prompts and up to 3,000 responses a month, but no daily runs at this tier and a card for the trial.
  • Peec AI Starter, 85 euros a month: three models of your choice, ChatGPT among the options, with 50 prompts tracked daily.
  • SE Ranking Core, 87.20 euros a month billed annually (109 monthly): 100 prompts a day; the 14-day trial needs no card.
  • cloro, an API with no dashboard and a paid placement in our comparison: 5 credits per ChatGPT answer with web search, 7 for a full response, with 500 free credits a month.

Our honest advice: do not pay for daily tracking until you can say what one extra ChatGPT mention is worth. Until then, a free monthly check and a spreadsheet tell you as much.

Frequently asked questions

How do I track brand mentions in ChatGPT?

Write four category questions that leave your name out and two that name you. Ask them in ChatGPT every month with the same model and settings, and log whether you were named, your position, competitors, description and sources. Add the GA4 count of chatgpt.com sessions.

Is there a tool to see if ChatGPT mentions my brand?

Yes. Our free ChatGPT mention tracker asks six buyer questions through OpenAI's API and shows every answer, no account needed. Ahrefs, Semrush and SE Ranking have free checkers too; paid brand trackers add daily runs and history.

What's the best ChatGPT mentions tracker?

For a one-off check, a free tracker that shows full answers. For cheap daily monitoring, Otterly.AI Lite has the clearest entry plan, and Am I Cited gives the most prompts at entry. Already paying for an SEO suite? Check its built-in tracking first. Details are in the full tracker comparison.

How can I see how often my brand is mentioned in ChatGPT?

Frequency is a count over time, so it needs a schedule. Paid trackers repeat your prompts automatically; SE Ranking Core runs 100 a day. With a free check, paste each monthly run into your sheet and the results column becomes your frequency.

How do I check ChatGPT mentions without a tool?

Use a new chat per question, memory off and a fixed model. Ask your six questions and note the brands named, their order and any sources. Allow about half an hour a month. The three-engine tracking guide applies the same method to Perplexity and Gemini.

Does blocking GPTBot stop ChatGPT from mentioning my brand?

Not in search. GPTBot covers training and OAI-SearchBot covers ChatGPT search, independently. Block OAI-SearchBot and your pages will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, apart from navigational links. Block GPTBot and your own pages stop feeding future models, though other sites can still mention you.

Get on the pages ChatGPT reads

A brand's own homepage is rarely the source behind a category answer; directory and launch listings with a clear one-liner often are. We run LaunchIt partly for that reason, so treat this section as coming from an interested party.

Whichever tier you choose, your listing page is permanent and never expires. It sits on a domain with an Ahrefs Domain Rating of 61 and carries a dofollow link to your site. Basic Launch is free: it waits in the standard review queue, with the earliest free slot currently about two months out, and needs a backlink to LaunchIt from your site before approval. Premium is a one-time $14.99 at early pricing, normally $19: launch as soon as tomorrow on any open day, with homepage placement on launch day and a verified badge on your listing, and no backlink or badge required on your site. Everything is on the LaunchIt pricing page.

Submit your launch with the one-liner from your sheet, then compare next month's six answers with this month's. The second run is where tracking starts to pay off.
